3 Things You Should Know About Your Tires

By Ellen Lalande

With the passing of Memorial Day, this week kicks off the unofficial start to the summer travel season. Because so many of you will be on the roads, we (aided by the Rubber Manufacturers Association) thought it would be the perfect time to give you a quick refresher course in tire care and maintenance to ensure you don’t get stuck on the side of the road when you should be enjoying your adventures. Here are 3 very important fundamentals you should know about your tires:

1.  Checking your tire tread takes less than 5 minutes.

The tread on your tires provides traction and grip when turning corners, and is one of the most crucial systems to keeping you safely on the road. It is also one of the easiest things to check, if you know what to look for. You’re probably familiar with the “Penny Test”, but we have an even easier trick you may not be so familiar with: checking the tire wear bar level.

The tire wear indicator bar can be found in between the tire treads, and is a foolproof way to find out how soon you will need new tires. If you can see the wear bar is below the tread level, you're safe; however, if you notice it's even with the tread, it's time to start shopping.

2.  Tire pressure is important, even if you just replaced them.

Even new tires require maintenance! On average, tires lose about 1 pound per square inch (psi) every month, and lose an additional 1 psi for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Not sure how much air should be in there to be considered “properly inflated”? Check the labels on your vehicle. These are located on the door post, fuel door, glove box, or in the owner’s manual, and will look like the image on the right.

You should take note, the "cold tire inflation pressure" pertains to tires that have not been driven in at least 3 hours. When you drive on your tires, it generates heat and the air inside expands. If you measure air pressure when the air hasn't settled, you run the risk of having under-inflated tires, leading to reduced gas mileage and increased risk of tire failure.

3.  Packing lighter may help save your vacation.

Did you know that overloading your vehicle may lead to excessive heat, tire failure, vehicle damage, and/or injury? I can tell you pretty confidently that before writing this entry, I'd never given much thought to how much my bags weighed, unless I was trying to avoid the excess baggage fee on my next flight.

If you're hauling enough clothes/toiletries/etc. for a long vacation (or just to have a few options each night, amirite ladies?), you may want to glance at that vehicle placard mentioned in #2. The manufacturer load recommendations appear right underneath the seating capacity, and a quick calculation will let you know how much of a margin you have to fit that extra suitcase.

At this point, you may be thinking "Who wants to wait 3 hours to measure my tire pressure?" or "These *sound* simple enough, but I have a lot on my plate trying to plan this family vacation." These are fair statements, and we're happy to help take some of that pressure off of you (see what I did there?)

Let us do the prep work with a complimentary vehicle inspection, or schedule an appointment with us to align and balance your tires before you hit the road. Plus, when you take advantage of our parts & service specials, you'll save some extra cash for that hard-earned vacation and peace of mind.

What's Happening This Month in Pocatello

By Ellen Lalande

Spring is the start of Event Season, and here at Phil Meador we’re keeping busy with our preparation for all the upcoming activities in Pocatello!

Two weeks ago, we joined tons of local (and some not-so-local) car enthusiasts at Holt Arena for Chrome in the Dome. This particular event is always a blast, since we get out and about to talk cars with people who aren’t necessarily in the market. It also gives us a chance to contribute back to ISU students, with proceeds funding activities for students in the College of Technology. I found myself pretty impressed with the turn-out, and took lots of pictures to share – You can see them on Phil Meador Toyota's Facebook page.

We also took part in Spring Fair last weekend, giving us the opportunity to show the community what we could do to add a personal touch to people's existing vehicles with help from our Parts & Accessories Departments

The turn-out at both events has been amazing, and we are looking forward to all the upcoming local activities in the next few weeks!

April 11th
  • Ellis Elementary's 5k Family Run/Walk
    • 100% of the proceeds from this 5k Run/Walk benefit the students, and goes towards the myON and Accelerated Reading programs, field trips, and upgrades for classroom technology.
  • Pocatello Motocross Park Round #1 Race
    • Since 2003, PMXP has offered a fun and exciting riding experience for people of all ages. The track has an awesome and dedicated group of people to help make it what it is, aiming to provide a great racing environment for riders in the community.
  • Phil Meador Toyota's Grand Opening Event
    • You've heard of our big move, now stop by for some food, fun, and live entertainment! Find out more on our website, and stay in the know by adding our Facebook event to your calendar!
April 18th
  • Portneuf Valley Environmental Fair
    • Learn about small steps you can take at home, work, school, and on the road to improve our local environment. The fair is FREE and has something for everyone—just ask one of the over 5,000 attendees from last year. Bring your friends and family and enjoy dozens of hands-on activities, pick up green goodies, listen to great live music, and enjoy a free Idaho baked potato, hot dog, or freeze-dried ice cream. This community event is sponsored by local businesses, organizations, and local government agencies.
April 25th
  • 35th Annual Bengal Auction
    • Proceeds from this event benefit ISU student-athlete scholarships. You don't have to be a member of the Bengal Athletic Booster Club to join in the fun!

What I Wish I'd Known About Auto Dealers

By Ellen Lalande

Who exactly works at a car dealership anyway?
It’s not hard to see how the public feels about our industry in general; all it takes is a quick Google search to find horror stories and jokes about dishonest, shady salesmen just trying to make an easy buck at your expense.

We wouldn't buy a car from this guy either!
I used to feel the same way before I started working in the field. I hated having to take my car in for maintenance (forget about trying to make my first purchase), and was skeptical of everything that came out of my service advisor’s mouth. I used to make the dealer save my used parts so that I could inspect them after the approved work was completed.

Now that I’m 5 years in, I see the automotive dealer in a whole new light. Getting to know my co-workers and becoming more comfortable with jargon, processes, and seeing a behind-the-scenes view of how the business works has shown me that the employees are just regular people who happen to sell or service cars for a living.

Do I really need to buy/replace that?

It is my hope that in writing this blog, I can impart some personal knowledge I've gained, as well as insight on why we suggest you replace that serpentine belt (what are those for again?) or add windshield protectant on your new vehicle (unless you’re really skilled at dodging rocks on the highway). I also want to introduce you to our team, so you know who you’re dealing with.

We genuinely want to help.

Trusting your vehicle to the right people can be a nerve-racking experience. Our relationship with our customers is paramount to our success; Phil Meador Dealerships invest a lot into our community to see it flourish, but it doesn't do us any good if we can’t have an open dialogue about what’s working, what’s not, and how to improve our service to ensure you feel comfortable working with us.

You may be wondering at this point what’s in it for you. While I have plans for new content and helpful information you’ll need in researching your next vehicle (or deciding which services you need), your feedback and questions will ensure I cover the things YOU want to know before you spend your hard-earned dollars. The research process in itself can be daunting, and I want to make it easier for you to fully understand the information so you can make the best decisions for your investment.

We want to hear from you.

Please post your comments below to let me know what information you’d like to see in the coming weeks, or feel free to reach out to me directly at feedback@philmeador.com. You may also call me at 208-237-2700, or stop by any one of our three locations to provide your individual concerns or ideas. While I encourage your thoughts, please keep in mind this is a public forum and rude or slanderous comments may be deleted. I’m more than happy to work with you and welcome your participation; however, I do ask that we all treat content writers, employees, and other commenters with respect.
